Dates: July 2020
For the past five weeks London Contemporary Dance School third year students have been working remotely with internationally renowned guest artists; Jamila Johnson-Small, Thick & Tight, Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome and Leah Marojević to create new pieces of work to present as a celebration of their time at LCDS. In any other year, these works would have been open to the public and presented on our theatre stage. But the challenges of Covid has led to an explosion of creativity to re-invent this experience for the present time. All you can expect is the unexpected.
These students completed their studies in the midst of a pandemic and the growing international protests against racism and structural injustice. They have reimagined what it is to work as a community of artists, dispersed across continents and time zones, restricted by shrinking spaces and anxieties over touch and contact. They have taught us so many lessons about how to care for one another in this changing world. These outstanding commissioned guest choreographers also switched their thinking, from live to the digital domain, and have truly risen to the challenge of working collaboratively through screens and across mediated distances. Together these artists, both students and professionals, have discovered new worlds and new ways to create. They invite you to discover new ways to encounter and engage with people still dancing despite it all.
