Vilma Tihilä is a multidisciplinary artist from Helsinki, Finland. She works as a director and choreographer with film and stage productions combining contemporary dance, classical and electronic new music, physical theatre and video.
Tihilä graduated as a dancer from Turku Conservatory 2015. She has also studied opera and music theory in Helsinki Sibelius Academy and physical cinema in Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. After graduation Tihilä started developing her own hybrid arts practice and since then she has been working with her own productions on stage and on film. Her work is performed and screened at various theatres and festivals internationally, including Loikka Dance Film Festival in Finland, Quinzena de Dança de Almada in Portugal, Bestia Danzantes Dance Film Festival in Chile and Fatej Festival in Cameroon among others.
In her work Tihilä is interested in encounters of different forms of artistic expression. She works through questions, for example: How do we hear the movement? Is it possible to see the sound or the music? How to move an image? In relationship to these questions MA in Screendance studies open a wide creative field to explore and play with. During the studies Tihilä wants to throw herself into processes and techniques she hasn’t yet been working with, develop her cinematic practice, try out new ideas and enjoy every bit!
